What's the difference between a turnout blanket and a stable blanket?

Stable blankets are not waterproof and are designed for horses kept inside; they're often softer and more flexible but will soak through in turnout. If your horse lives out or goes outside in all weather, a waterproof turnout is essential. Many owners keep one of each and use both in rotation.

How do I know if my horse's blanket fits correctly?
A well-fitted blanket should sit at the base of the withers without pressing down on the spine, allow two to three fingers of clearance at the chest, and reach to the base of the tail without dragging.
